Rare in California is a location where one can truly appreciate all four seasons. Tehachapi is one such rare beauty.
Tehachapi is truly an oasis, located between the Palmdale/Lancaster area and the Bakersfield area of California; sitting roughly 50 miles between the two and nestled in oak laden rolling hills. The trip to Los Angeles from Tehachapi is about 120 miles as well. Unique homes are scattered about the country-side along with apple orchards and small farms.
The history of Tehachapi goes as far back as the Native American's who gave the city it's name - which is thought to mean "Sweet water and acorns" (because of it's beautiful topography and mammoth oak trees). The later inception of the southern pacific railroad which built a rail line to travel over the Tehachapi summit in order to bring goods into the Los Angeles region created "The Tehachapi Loop". This loop is named for the technique in which the railroad track was laid to form a loop in order to navigate the steep descent from the upper Tehachapi summit. Today, the historic train station, built in the late 1800's still stands in downtown Tehachapi and is on the national registry of historic places.
Tehachapi residents enjoy the slower pace of life, while at the same time enjoying the conveniences afforded to those living in larger cities. There is a great deal of shopping in the ever growing city proper as well as unique shops that line the city's downtown area. Restraunts range from fast food chains to quaint, family owned diners with spectacular dishes that can only be found here.
Tehachapi also prides itself on its artist community, where art galleries and artist hang-outs are the norm. Annual festivals celebrate local artisans as well as support the local economy. There is also a large community of animal lovers that care for strays and vigorously promote spaying and neutering of domestic pets. The area is is full of people who truly take pride in their community surroundings and genuinely care.
Tehachapi has its own police department and school district. The schools are proud to promote their higher than average test scores and the fact that they hold top-honors in athletics. Many of the Tehachapi area schools have extra-curricular programs that are not only fun for kids, but teach them the skills the need to be successful. The area schools are some of the best in California.
